When you visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, you may be planning on going on a hike. You may also be wondering what all you should take with you. We want to share some things you should pack for when you go hiking in the Smoky Mountains. You don’t need a lot, but the things you do need could definitely come in handy! Here are 9 things you should pack when you go hiking in the Smoky Mountains:
1. Comfortable Clothes
The most important thing you need to pack is comfortable clothes. If you are planning on hiking but don’t bring something you’re comfortable moving around in, you probably won’t have a good time. You should wear athletic clothing that is breathable so you don’t get too hot in the warmer months, and you should definitely pack heavier if you plan on hiking in the winter. Another important piece of clothing to pack is shoes. You need hiking boots to protect your feet and make it easy to climb over the terrain in the mountains.
2. Backpack
For everything else on this list, you will need some kind of bag to put all of these items in. A backpack is a great thing to take hiking because you can wear it easily, and it won’t get in the way.
3. Water Bottle
Since you will be exercising heavily by hiking in the Smoky Mountains, you will want to bring enough water with you to stay hydrated. You should pack a large refillable water bottle that has a secure closure so it won’t spill in your backpack.
4. Snacks
If you’re going on a short hike, you may not need to pack snacks. However, if you are going on a hike and know you will probably need something to eat to keep your energy up, you should pack snacks in your backpack. Trail mix, protein bars, and other kinds of snacks are ideal.
5. Bug Spray
Since you’re out in nature, you’ll probably come in contact with all kinds of creatures, including bugs. You should definitely pack bug spray and take it with you on your hike. You don’t want to be eaten up by bugs!
6. Sunscreen
Even if you’re under the trees as you go through the woods, you don’t want to get a sunburn. Protect your skin from the harsh rays of the sun by bringing sunscreen with you. The spray-on kind is probably easier to handle when you’re out on the trail.
7. First Aid Kit
Anything can happen when you’re hiking in the Smoky Mountains. You should always be prepared, and that includes accidents. You should pack a first aid kit in your backpack with essentials, such as bandages, alcohol wipes, and antiseptic.
8. Compass
Even though most people use their phones to find where they are going nowadays, you should always bring a compass. Your phone could die or you could not have service in the national park. Anything can happen, and it’s better to be prepared.
9. Map
It’s also a good idea to have a detailed map of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You will be able to find where you are in case you get lost. Again, many people use their phones, but if you lose service or your phone dies, you’re in trouble!
