Riding around in this area of the park is unlike any other experience, and if you’ve never done it, you should the next time you’re in town! Here are the top 6 reasons why you should drive the Cades Cove Loop:
1. See Incredible Views
Cades Cove Loop is one of the best places to see all the best parts of the Great Smoky Mountains. You’ll have incredible views of the mountain range. In the fall, the mountains are speckled with red, orange, and yellow trees that make for an amazing sight. There are also a ton of meadows and fields, and in the spring, they are full of wildflowers and bright green grass. When snow comes in during winter, everything covered in snow is beautiful along the Cades Cove Loop.
2. Might See Wildlife
Not only will you see natural formations, you also might spot a wild animal or two! Many people see black bears throughout the Cades Cove Loop. Early in the morning or late in the evening, you could see white tailed deer, turkey, and other creatures. If you want to have the chance to see wildlife, Cades Cove is the place to go.
3. Hike Some Trails
There are quite a few hiking trails throughout the Cades Cove Loop. Abrams Falls has an impressive waterfall at the end of the hike, and it’s only 5.5 miles roundtrip. Longer hikes that start in this area include Thunderhead Mountain and Rocky Top. See the old fire tower when you hike Rich Mountain Loop.
4. See Historic Buildings
Cades Cove Loop is full of historic buildings that are cool to see. There are old homesteads with cabins and barns, as well as a couple of churches. There’s even an old grist mill and smokehouse. You can walk in many of these buildings. It’s neat to see how people lived before this area was part of the national park.
5. Have a Picnic
One of the most fun things to do along the Cades Cove Loop is to have a picnic! Grab your favorite sandwich fixings, a meal from a restaurant in town, or hamburger and hot dog ingredients. In the picnic area, there are charcoal grills you can use. Many of the tables sit next to the river for a beautiful view while you all eat together!
6. Spend Time With Loved Ones
The best part about traveling the Cades Cove Loop is spending time with your loved ones. You will have fun with your family and friends exploring this area of the park, no matter if you just drive along the 11 mile loop or you get out at every stop to fully experience everything.
